Legal documents show that the Carrier family took the title of 23 acres of land near Little Bayou, Louisiana, in 1868. What follows is a long history of exploitation and legal battles, revealing how systemic issues have compounded their struggles over time. This book not only focuses on this struggle but also the broader injustices the community has suffered at the hands of successive governments.
In Burden of Truth, Robbie Carrier Bethel and Kim Malcolm focus on the themes of injustice and prejudice, family and legacy, corruption and power, and community resilience. These themes interweave to create a powerful narrative that is both heartbreaking and illustrative of the struggle and enduring strength of those who refuse to be silenced. I particularly appreciated Bethel’s resolve to find justice for her family and community despite the struggles in her personal life. I loved how the narrative went into depth into the historical background and the legal procedures, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by the Carrier family. This attention to detail brought the story to life, making the struggle feel deeply personal. I highly recommend this book to readers who appreciate a detailed examination of past and present issues affecting communities and those who enjoy impactful stories about hope amidst the fight for justice and equality.
