First, We Kill All the Lawyers: Donovan Trait, Book 1 is a paranormal crime mystery by Seelie Kay. Named as the most eligible bachelor in Chicago, Donovan Trait was no stranger to a courtroom. Following his appearance before Judge Shirley Magnusen, Donovan receives a strange text message outside the court building, reading "First we kill all the lawyers, starting with you." He was then stabbed but survived. After a second attempt was made on his life, Donovan went into hiding as other lawyers were being killed off, one by one. What the murderer doesn't realize is that Donovan is a vampire who is in love with the judge. All assume that Donovan is dead until an attempt is made on Shirley's life. She is moved into protective custody and is relieved to see Donovan is alive and well. After he professes his love for her and tells her his biggest secret, Donovan proposes. He and Shirley announce their engagement very publicly to flush out the killer, but as Donovan uses all his contacts to dig into the possible identity of the murderer, she is moved to Switzerland for the treatment of brain cancer.
"An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. A life for a life. Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord." Seelie Kay has plunged straight into the deep end and presented readers with a wonderfully written love story, murder mystery, and a 'whodunnit' that tops all others I have read over the years. First, We Kill All the Lawyers is taken from Henry VI, part 2, by Shakespeare, and I believe the bard would be pleased to see this line put to such good use. I rarely find a vampire romance that is so completely different from the Bella-Edward storyline, but seeing a serial killer on a rampage without the knowledge that one of the intended victims is a vampire is quite eloquently done. The love story, the murders, the vampire council, and all the paranormal characters throughout shouldn't go together, but in this case, they do so perfectly. I commend Kay's writing and look forward to what she has in store for us. First, We Kill All the Lawyers is a highly recommended read for fans of paranormal love stories with a twist. I hope this book takes off like a rocket.
