In Fate & Flirtations by D. Thrush, Molly had always enjoyed Max's company when he frequented the bar where she worked. She loved his empathetic and gentle nature, and when he was thrown out of his apartment, Molly suggested he move in with her. It wasn’t long before his friend, Sam, a confident and self-assured flirt, joined them. The three friends enjoyed spending time together and partying hard in 1970’s New York. Although Sam and Molly soon become an item, it is on a casual basis. They all dream of taking a road trip to California, but when Molly and Max take longer than expected to prepare for the trip, Sam goes alone. The bond of friendship between Molly and Max turns from friendship to love. When Sam returns, the relationship between all three becomes an emotional turmoil where the boundaries of love, friendship and fidelity are not known. Follow Molly as she tries to understand the difference between desire and love in this heartwarming tale of love, friendship and loss over the decades.

It is not often I read a book and immediately get transported into the lives of the characters. For me, the depth of the three main characters was magnificent. I empathised with Molly’s dilemma, as she loved both Sam and Max for such different reasons. The whole story line was so realistic and not your normal romantic love story, but about real people and real emotions. The dialogue was also very distinctive for each character. The author has created an excellent entanglement of three people all with their own idea of what love is, and which differ from each other. The whole journey of the three characters trying to figure out what they want from life and each other made for a very engaging read. Be prepared to shed a tear in places.
