Fate and Freedom: Book I - The Middle Passage by K.I. Knight introduces us to Margaret and John, who are forcefully taken from their home in Africa and shipped to the silver mines in Mexico over four thousand miles away. However, the captain of their vessel suddenly has a change of heart and, instead of Mexico, they find themselves in Virginia where they settle and have to deal with the same things any settler in the new land must deal with. Challenges such as Indian attacks, sickness and just the need to break into a new land abound. This is Virginia before slavery and one that is steeped in intrigues of all kinds.
The very first pages of this book pulled me into the story and a world that was being created. The landscape is painted beautifully and the more we read the deeper you get to know the land and the characters. I can't imagine the terror that Margaret and John felt, and then some relief at not being taken to the mines. Yet how can you make a home in a new place without fear as well? Such courage is shown and you can feel it through the pages as you read. It is clear that author K.I. Knight has put a great deal of research into this book and it comes across in the writing, the land, and the characters. This awe inspiring story is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good historical story.
