Fans of paranormal, adventure, and poetically entrenched stories, beware: even you may not escape the sting of the prose and the excitement of the adventure. Family Secrets by Augusta Wright is Book Two in a series and it follows what becomes of four siblings after the death of Laura Ralston, their mother. The secret journals she has left behind leave the children with many questions about who their mother really was, about parenthood, and their roots. The twins, Will and Eli, are about to find out who their real father is as they set out on an adventure to Texas. Black Hawk leaves Raven, his sister, at the ranch and sets out on a journey across Colorado and a great part of New Mexico; a journey that will test everything he thought he knew about himself and awaken his mystical powers.
Family Secrets explores the themes of family, love, and adventure in a narrative that is steeped in mystery and that has strong hints of adventure. Augusta Wright writes with unusual fluidity and the limpidity of the language coupled with her storytelling skills make this an enjoyable read. The plot is suspenseful and the intrigue grows stronger with the shifts in subplots and the urgency in the characters to discover the truth. An unfamiliar premise, complex plotting, and characters that are strangely familiar are some of the elements that set this story aside from the run-of-the-mill tales in the genre. I just couldn’t put it down.
