Failure of Justice: A Brutal Murder, An Obsessed Cop, Six Wrongful Convictions by John Ferak is a riveting true crime read. This real life story revolves around the murder of a Nebraska widow in 1985 and the tumultuous and twisty case that ultimately led to the arrest and conviction of six individuals - known thereafter as the "Beatrice 6." Then the unimaginable happens - a whopping twenty years after the conviction, the truth eventually comes out that the six might not be as guilty as once thought. The book goes behind the scenes and takes readers on a journey that they will not soon forget.
Being a fan of the television show Dateline, I knew that I would likely enjoy reading Failure of Justice and I was right. Ferak does an amazing job of keeping the action going, but also keeping to the facts. I was riveting by all of the tiny details and observations as the case unfolded, and felt like I was right there alongside, trying to uncover the clues and whodunit. It's amazing how complex and flawed the criminal justice system can be, but it's also not surprising considering the amount of people, evidence, and paperwork that goes through the justice system on a daily basis. You'd actually think stuff like this might happen more often. Ferak produced a solid and intriguing read that stayed with me long after I'd turned the last page. I would recommend Failure of Justice by John Ferak to all fans of true crime, thriller, drama and suspense genres.
