Faded Memories – Unleashed by Jerrie Canady Stewart is a memoir about the life of the author, Jerrie Canady Stewart, and her siblings from childhood, to being a young adult, to being an adult, and all the way to being a mother. This is a book that would appeal most to an audience of adults who enjoy memoirs about people who have the strength to rise above their circumstances. Jerrie Canady Stewart was born in Wilson, North Carolina to Herman and Hazel Canady in 1943; she was born into an unhappy family situation with an abusive drunken father and an absent mother. Yet, even with her unfortunate beginnings, she managed to rise above the abuse and hurt to turn herself into a successful mother with children of her own.
Faded Memories – Unleashed by Jerrie Canady Stewart was a very melancholy book filled with stories from Jerrie’s childhood years that made me wince and feel her fear. The time where her father thought that Jerrie and her siblings knew where their mother was and would not tell him, and he chased them around with a gun, threatening to shoot them, gave me goosebumps just imagining their utter terror. Then for them to be handed back over to that monster, only to be whipped for fleeing from him, made me so angry. There were a few times where I had to take a deep breath and remind myself that this all happened at a different time so as to calm myself. I truly cannot imagine how Jerrie managed to survive and flourish after the childhood she experienced. That aside, she did a spectacular job in writing her life story in this book and the inclusion of multiple pictures and articles written about her family provided an outside perspective that gave a good contrast to the book.
