Eyes of Morpheus by Kevin D. Miller sees Dr. Emily Grace, head of the Institute of Cryonic Technologies, place patients into a cryonic state in the hope that medicine in the future will cure them. With an inoperable brain tumor, she places herself into the program and wakes up in 2108 to find her tumor gone. A fellow cryonic patient, Travis McAllister, is assigned as her mentor to familiarize her with life in the new century. In charge of the Institute, Dr. Steinburg is running the Morpheus Project, a program to prepare astronauts for deep space travel to find a new home for humanity, as war has almost made Earth uninhabitable. Disturbed by some of the things she finds, Emily and Travis hack into the Institute’s network, and she wakes up in another reality. Steinburg tells her all her previous memories were induced as part of the Morpheus project and asks for her help to solve a major problem. Her feelings for Travis gradually change into something deeper but her reality is shattered again when she discovers Steinburg had deceived her and the world is not as he said. What follows is a heart-wrenching struggle to save herself and Travis in an attempt to find a new life.
In Eyes of Morpheus, Kevin D. Miller throws readers into a fast-paced, engaging story that explores interesting concepts and realities. The book plays on Emily’s past and future in several reality shifts that make her question her sanity and belief. Is her life real, or is everything a dream induced by the Morpheus Project? Miller leads readers on a journey where they will question what is real, hoping that Emily will finally break through into the real world and find peace and happiness. Emily’s character is well developed, as is her interaction with Travis, a somewhat comical personality. Some story twists come as startling surprises that stretch credibility. Nevertheless, Eyes of Morpheus is an enjoyable read. Overall, I found the book interesting.
