Ernest Dingle: The Mystery of the Princes in the Tower by David Tully is a wonderful tale about the adventures of Ernest Dingle. On the outside he appears to be your average eleven-year-old boy who loves adventure, but with one exception: he has been able to turn his sleeping dreams and need for adventure into a reality. Ernest’s grandfather, Walter, had a habit of disappearing for months at a time and neither Ernest nor his mother ever knew why ... until one day Grandpa Walter shared a secret with Ernest as to why he was always gone for so long.
Grandpa Walter had discovered a time travel machine. This machine is like no other - it’s a bathtub hidden in the deep crevices of a well in the backyard. Grandpa Walter decided that he’s too old to be a time traveler any longer, so he turned the reins over to Ernest. But Grandpa Walter warned Ernest about three things when time traveling: 1) blend into his surroundings; 2) do everything possible not to change history; and 3) be very careful whom he trusts. Ernest was so excited about the time machine that he inadvertently sent himself and his dog, Dudley, back to 1483 medieval London times. Can he and Dudley adapt to life and survive in 1483? And will he be able to maintain the time traveling warnings that Grandpa Walter had told him? Pick up a copy and see for yourself.
I love children stories and this one is no exception; each bite is so tasty that you anticipate the next, which does not disappoint. Just reading this book took me back to my youth and now I too am beginning to use my dreams and my need for adventure to help with my creative juices. I highly recommend this book from preschool to fourth graders. We should never lose that dream and need for adventure that we each begin with as a child.
