Erase and Rewind by Annemarie Musawale is an interesting science-fiction anecdote about a young girl's lives and her alternatives. Rosemary and Russel are twins. Their mother, Celestine, had been a jazz singer when she married their father. Bored with family life and regretting her decision to desert her métier, Celestine left Rosemary, Russ, and their father to rebuild her career. With her abandonment, and as their father has little to no interest in them and what they do, the twins are left pretty much to their own devices. Rosemary has a three-week menstruation and, unable to confide in her ill-tempered father, she doesn't have many options. With her feeling weak and dizzy, Rosemary's brother takes her to their Uncle Rufus, who is a doctor and their father's estranged twin brother. Because her father won't miss her presence, she stays with her uncle while she gets her health back. Things don't always go as planned and her life changes dramatically and permanently.
Erase and Rewind by Annemarie Musawale is a fascinating science-fiction short story that contains a few paranormal elements. I thought this story was intriguing with all the esoteric hints. This story is a teaser. It mentions Uncle Rufus sending occult books to Russ, and in several places indicates that Rufus experiments with mixing medicine with the supernatural. Also, there is a suggestion that Celestine's mother is a witch. This short story contains several hints of the arcane, but doesn't expand on its tenets. I felt sorry for the two abandoned and neglected children, and I felt this is why - in the end - Rosemary made the life choice she did. I would recommend this story to those who enjoy science-fiction with supernatural twists.
