Wow! I just finished reading Epitome by author Elisa O'Donnell, and I remain astounded and still thinking about this great read. The second book in the series, and following the equally great book Enigma, the story follows familiar character Genesis Velorum. After she's rescued a friend from space, Genesis has mixed feelings. She's worried that the friendship is changed, ruined somehow, and she's not sure what to do with what she now knows. Her captain, Nicholas Swift, makes her a GURU (Geneticists Ultra Reality Union) and sends her on a special mission, along with other GURUs. Genesis knows the mission will be a long one, and worries that it might be her last, that she won't make it back. And when she and the rest of the GURUs find out the truth of what their mission really is, the stakes become even higher.
I loved this book. Loved it. I'm not sure what else I can really say about it that would be any better than that. Author Elisa O'Donnell has done an absolutely wonderful job at creating characters that the reader will really relate to, even though the setting is very different from what we might be used to. Her world creation abilities are second to none, and the way she moves a story forward is simply fantastic. I picked this book up, planning to only read a few chapters and go to sleep. Well, let's just say that my next day was full of yawning because I read it straight through to the end. I needed to know what happened. Epitome is a book that would be enjoyed by any reader who loves science fiction, whether you are a young adult or not, or any reader simply looking for a great story. I highly recommend this book, and am very much looking forward to seeing what Elisa O'Donnell has in store for us next.
