In Enemy Souls by A.J. Maguire, the crew of the spaceship Zephyr is on the run from the Consulate, the governing organization of the universe. The captain, Jorry, and Seach are enhanced soldiers with an adoptive son, Devon. Along with a comatose colleague, John, with whom they have had a long but not completely amicable relationship, they undertake a rescue that takes them into Consulate space at the behest of an acquaintance, Paul. In their ensuing escape, the Zephyr is damaged in a fight with Consulate ships. At an abandoned station located in one of the rings of Saturn, will they be able to make repairs to the Zephyr in time to escape? Is the station actually abandoned?
Enemy Souls by A.J. Maguire gives us an entertaining and thrilling science fiction adventure without too much of an information dump. The back story comes in the form of the characters’ memories of past experiences and history together. These memories bring the characters to life, adding dimension to them and conveying the sense that they did not just come into being as the story progresses. The science also does not hinder the flow of the story. It is matter-of-factly described and does not distract readers from the narrative. The tech is as believable and fun as the story. Readers will like these characters with all their flaws and want them to ultimately win against the odds. The author succeeds in providing readers with a satisfying ending to this well written, rollicking space adventure and making them hope to read more stories about these characters.
