Enemy At The Gate is a work of historical fiction set during the effects of the Second World War and was penned by author Mary D. Brooks. Written as the opening novel of the Women of the Resistance series, this novel focuses on the invasion and occupation of Greece in 1941. The central character is thirteen-year-old Zoe Lambros, whose idyllic life is snatched away by the ravages of war, and suddenly she sees the brutal treatment of those around her who don’t fit into the Nazi regime. As a fighter in the Bouboulina Resistance, Zoe takes on a heavy mantle to rescue those whom the occupying forces will murder if they get the chance.
Author Mary D. Brooks captures the fighting spirit of the occupied people of Greece in this riveting and inspiring novel. Suitable for all ages (with an appropriate level of violence for the period), this incredible tale of resistance and female empowerment touches the soul as well as provides an exciting and action-packed narrative. The historical descriptions are atmospheric and drawn with well thought out lexis and imagery, which brings both the stark, brutal dangers of life in the resistance and the incredible spirit of Zoe and her cousin Ellie into vivid detail. The character development makes for highly addictive reading as the girls develop and learn. This is an inspirational tale with authentic dialogue and realistic instances from recent history. Overall, Enemy At The Gate is a highly recommended read for WW2 historical fans and empowering women’s fiction and YA fans alike.
