Enchanted by Linda Heavner Gerald is an emotional journey that stays with you. This contemporary romance novel centers on a woman whose secrets could destroy everything and everyone she cares about ... if she could only remember. This intriguing premise pulls you in from the start. Here we have a woman with no memory, yet carrying a burden locked inside, standing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She meets a compassionate, well-to-do but lonesome widower named Mr. Grover in the offices upstairs, who takes her under his wing as a protector of sorts, offering one of his guest cottages to her for a few days. The mysterious but beautiful woman gratefully accepts. This sets in motion a kind of trust that grows between the two. As they spend time together in conversation and travel, their happiness grows, and so does their bond. Grover knows she could regain her memory at any time and her family could locate her, so he tries to protect himself from being hurt. She wants to protect him as well since he's her rescuer and confidante, but her secret could ruin everything.
Linda Heavner Gerald has crafted a classic romance, but with a definite contemporary feel. The mystery and secretive nature of the plot, and of the main character Elizabeth, weaves a spell that compels you to get to the bottom of her background, and you keep wondering if there is more to her story and the plot in general. This author breezily handles suspense and scenarios that transport you into the world she has built. There is a balance of intrigue and compassion that I like, and you never quite know what to expect next. The romantic factor is also suspenseful because the two refrain from carrying out their desires. I admire the spiritual aspects of the novel, which are there but don't detract from the mood or plot, and I like the way the story ends There is a fairytale feel to this story, which elevates it to another level. Enchanted by Linda Heavner Gerald is definitely a romance novel you should read in 2021.
