Emoji Adventures, Volume 6: The Secret Crush is a humorous story book for children, grades 4-6, written by P.T. Evans and illustrated by Jake Tashjian. Everyone was pretty excited about the upcoming science fair projects, and the fact that Mr. Hartman, their science teacher, would be assigning pairs of students to work as teams. Annie was kind of nervous about the partner thing as she definitely did not want to be partnered with her devilish twin brother, Kevin. Who knew what kind of gross or disgusting project he would dream up? On her way to class, however, a visit to her locker got Annie excited for a totally different reason. Inside her locker was a box of chocolates and a card from a secret admirer. Nothing like that had ever happened to Annie before, but she realized she was in danger of being late for class, so she rushed off to the science lab. As Mr. Hartman began assigning partners, poor Zoe got Kevin, which was a big relief for Annie, who had to put up with him all the time anyway. Her friends, Dot and Billy, were assigned as a team, and they came up with the idea to have a fundraising dance as part of the science fair. Annie was partnered with Austin, one of the really cool kids in school, and she couldn’t help but wonder if he was her secret crush.
PT Evans’ humorous story book for children, Emoji Adventures, Volume 6: The Secret Crush, kept me smiling from the first page to the very last. I’ve read and reviewed other books in this series and am always on the lookout for a new volume. Somehow, Evans has turned emojis into real life characters that are interesting and fun to read about -- even the poop emoji! Tashjian’s illustrations work perfectly to enhance the transformation from smiley faces to characters. I love the way he superimposes Annie and her friends onto photographic images, especially the science lab which looks exactly like the lab in my junior high school. Evans’ story is well-written and contains vocabulary that is just challenging enough to make it interesting without discouraging young readers. Know what a cootie catcher is?
