Elvictus is a work of evocative fantasy and sword and sorcery style fiction and was penned by author Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait. In this compelling novella, which serves as a prequel to the novel Ashera of the Kingswood, we find ourselves in a magical world where danger and darkness threaten to pervade and disturb the peace. The tree-dwelling elves, known as the Elvictus, have seen many years of harmony until the elder Crandor spies something dark in the immediate future. Along with a small troop of fellow elves, Crandor stands the test of bravery as the quest begins to find the creatures whom the darkness has already infiltrated.
This is a novella that packs a lot in, and will certainly entertain fans of high fantasy and fans of author Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait’s other works. Having previously fallen for her Legend of the Dragon Child series, I was delighted to enter this new world of characters as elves take the center stage in the heroic action. The descriptive power was off the charts, bringing lavish visuals to both the cast of characters and the world which they inhabit. The information is heavily loaded, but it informs readers about the world in its prequel state before the main action of the following novel will take place, which is highly useful for readers to know. Overall, Elvictus presents high fantasy at its most atmospheric and delivers a great primer for readers to discover this author and her magical mind-works.
