Immerse yourself in a captivating adventure with Ann Hoang's Ella and Jake in the City of Sad. Featuring illustrations by Charity Russell, the book follows two young siblings, Ella and Jake, on a day when their mom leaves them with their Uncle Theo. Uncle Theo has errands to run in the nearby City of Sad, and he takes Ella and Jake with him to the city. The two kids come across Harold, a clown who is unhappy after the local balloon factory shut down and he lost his magical hat that he used to make people laugh. Harold takes Ella and Jake on a tour around the city, and they adopt a pet mouse while Ella gifts Harold with a different magical hat. Slowly, they work toward turning the town into the City of Smiles.
An invigorating children's book, Jake and Ella in the City of Sad will delight young readers below the age of ten. Ann Hoang has written a fascinating story filled with magic, wonder, and adventure. The characters are colorful and quirky, and so much fun. Apart from the absorbing story, this picture book also contains a few catchy rhymes that kids can sing out loud. Illustrator Charity Russell has done a brilliant job with the artwork. The illustrations enhance the read and add a lot to the characters' personalities. I loved the depiction of Harold the Clown as well as Uncle Theo. Ella and Jake are adorable siblings that children will find easy to relate to. Overall, it is a fantastic picture book for young readers.
