Hedgehog’s Winter by Raven Howell is a charming children’s picture book that captures the spirit of winter through the adventures of an enthusiastic hedgehog. Unlike his friends, who prefer to hibernate, Hedgehog is eager to explore the snowy landscapes and partake in winter activities. The story begins as Hedgehog finds himself alone, with all his friends retreating to their dens to escape the cold. Undeterred, Hedgehog dons his coat, scarf, boots, hat, and mittens, each adding a layer of excitement to his adventures. His solitary journey soon turns into a delightful exploration of winter’s offerings. He skates on frozen ponds, builds a snowman with Deer, who joins him in his wintry escapades, and experiences the thrill of sledding down hills.
What makes Hedgehog’s Winter particularly appealing is its gentle narrative that encourages perseverance and curiosity. Jeanne Ee Wei Yen’s vibrant and engaging artwork brings the winter wonderland to life on every page. The illustrations complement the story and add depth to Hedgehog’s character, showing his joyful and resilient nature. They are done in watercolor, which provides a refreshing change from the digital illustrations often seen in today’s books. The illustrations lend the narrative an authentic “storybook” feel. The story also excels at highlighting the simple pleasures of nature. From savoring a snowflake to sharing berries with a new friend, Hedgehog’s experiences are filled with moments of pure joy and wonder. Raven Howell’s writing is fluid and engaging, making it easy for children to follow along and for parents and teachers to read aloud. The story revolves around winter fun while subtly teaching about the winter habits of different animals and the environment. Hedgehog's Winter is a delightful read that captures the essence of winter fun through the eyes of an adorable and spirited hedgehog.
