From childhood, our sense of who we are and our role in society are shaped by our life experiences. Sometimes the role you adopt is far from who you really are and slowly your true self seems lost. Do you constantly disregard your own values and needs for others? Understanding where you gained the belief that unhealthy relationships and situations were acceptable will be uncovered in this guide. Then step by step you will learn how to change your mindset to one that empowers you. Using their experience as life coaches, the authors share their personal experiences and the techniques that have been successful in setting clear boundaries that will enrich your life and give you confidence in difficult settings. Throughout Drawing Your Line by Dawn Koufakis-Basel and Alison W Smith, you will rediscover your own sense of self-worth. You will find your unique voice and learn to set healthy boundaries with courage and determination. Using personal stories, video clips, and poetry, you will gain the skills to effectively cope with demanding or overwhelming situations if they occur.
Drawing Your Line is definitely a book that inspires you to make positive changes in your life. I would recommend you work through each chapter of this guide with a journal to gain the maximum benefit. Each chapter requires you to be honest and open with your answers but the results are life-changing. I have learned so much about the root causes of much of my behavior and beliefs about myself and others. The chapter on learning to be compassionate towards yourself and taking control of your inner voice was so simple yet extremely powerful. You may find yourself getting quite emotional as you work through each section, as it will unveil deep-rooted problems and beliefs you were unaware of. But if you continue to the end the insights are amazing; you will truly feel the weight of self-doubt and uncertainty lifting from your shoulders. There is even a section on dealing with difficult confrontational situations with calm confidence which I struggle with. The Integrity poem towards the end was so beautifully written, and the message conveyed really struck a chord with me. I also loved the chapter on gratitude and the importance of keeping a gratitude journal, something I wholeheartedly agree with. This guide is a must-read especially for those that have problems with low self-esteem and assertiveness.
