Dominion Over All is the first book in the Zak Bates Eco-Adventures series by W. Bradford Swift. Readers are introduced to Zak, a boy who loves animals and is distraught when his dog gets run over by a car. The dog is taken to a vet, and fortunately, a magical cat called Ra-Kit is able to help Zak. But before she helps him and his dog, Zak has to promise her to do whatever she asks of him in return. Little did Zak know that he would end up on an adventure the welfare of the whole planet would depend upon.
The book is aimed at young readers, but as an adult, I also enjoyed reading Dominion Over All by W. Bradford Swift very much. I love stories with interesting characters, and Zak's animal companions are very interesting indeed. It is a story full of magic (after all, you have a flying dog, warping, and talking animals) and some suspense (will Zak get to places in time? And if he does, does he even end up in the right place?). While there is no violence - as you'd expect from a book for kids - there is plenty of action to keep readers glued to the pages. In addition, the book has some very important messages about life, animals, and the planet we live on. It is a very rewarding read, and I would recommend it to readers of all ages. It definitely would be a good book to give to your kids and then talk about the content together.
