Distant Family is awesome. I love space opera…when it’s done right. When it’s done wrong, it is boring and, to be honest, I can rarely finish the book. But when it is done right, I look for that author again and again. If you like the protagonist, you look for that hero again and again. Commander L’ Hyatt Tsaurine Mharc is such a protagonist. T.L. McDonald is that kind of writer. I will be looking high and low for books in The Chronicles of Mharc series until I have read them all. I will be scanning bookshelves in every bookstore I visit for the name T.L. McDonald. I haven’t been so excited about the captain of a starship since I picked up my first Honor Harrington novel. That is the highest praise I can give this book, and to state that T.L. McDonald writes space opera like David Webb is the highest praise I can give its author because, in my humble opinion, David Webb is the best.
I love everything about Distant Family. I believe in family and that’s a strong theme in this book. I love the fact that a brother and sister serve on the same ship. I love that the crew are as loyal as a family should be. I’m all for a strong, smart woman who uses her head but trusts her heart. The plot is great. The tension is exquisite. The writing is superb. The writing, the attention to detail, especially military and scientific detail, is where most space opera fails. These areas are exactly where T.L. McDonald shines. I am so happy to have discovered this writer. Do yourself a favor. Read this book.
