Dissent by PJ Dean is book 2 of the Love Vanquishes All series. France, 1571, where a fragile state of peace exists after the last War of Religion and more needs to be done to keep it. A marriage is proposed between a Catholic princess and a Protestant (Huguenot) prince, a marriage that will solve all problems. Or will it? France is struggling to expand overseas and war costs have almost drained the country. Another marriage is proposed – Awa, daughter of a Roman Catholic Wolof diplomat from West Africa, outspoken yet dutiful, and Blaise, a descendant of a powerful Huguenot leader, a ladies' man who hates Roman Catholics. Can the marriage work? Can they trust each other enough to love and to save France from ruin?
Dissent: Love Vanquishes by PJ Dean is the second of a series and I did not read the first book. This is a historical story with plenty of facts, clearly the result of a great deal of research to get the book factually correct, the setting right and the language matching the era. This is a wonderful story of cross-race, cross-religious friendships and relationships, a powerful tale with the unlikeliest of characters. Those characters were developed thoroughly, to the extent that I felt as if I knew them. I needed to follow their story to see how it ended, that’s how compelling it was. There are places where the details and facts were a bit overpowering, knocking the story into second place, but, overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes historical romance stories.
