Digby’s Diary by E.D. Bird is the story of a standard French poodle who leads a pack of dogs on an adventure of saving three children in the Zimbabwean bush. A little girl has been kidnapped and the boys and dogs track her through the bush to rescue her. The story tells us how Digby makes friends with other dogs on his block. Each dog has unique skills that Digby discovers. He and his friend, another dog, Ruffles, begin by escaping and following the boys to see what they are doing. When he finds that they are in trouble, he enlists the other dogs to help him. The boys and dogs work for several days tracking the kidnappers through the bush. The boys borrow horses and food to help them as they hunt for Kim.
Digby tells the story from his POV. He writes it in his diary so that the cat, who is hard of hearing, can read it. The action of the story takes place in the Zimbabwean bush and is interesting because the pack of dogs and the boys have to track and then camp out. Digby talks about how the boys share supplies with the horses and the dogs because they are so far into the bush there is no food or water. Digby is excited by this adventure, even though it is not the way he usually spends his days. Digby and Ruffles, his companion from home, are clever and resourceful as they tag along, wanting to find the kidnapped girl. The story is well laid out and the descriptions carry the adventure along. It is a well crafted story about an adventure of kidnapping and rescue.
