Two brothers, Jali and Jax, go on a crusade to help Santa find a way to deliver gifts to the children of the world during COVID-19 in Chesand Gregory’s picture book, Did Santa Wear a Mask? ( A Christmas Adventure with the JAG Brothers). The narration is straightforward and realistic. One of my favorite quotes is on page 17: “It’s ok, Santa, don’t be sad. I know Christmas this year is different,” said Jali in a comforting voice.” Those words pulled at everything inside me, nearly bringing me to tears. Chesand Gregory also finds a way to convey the protocols recommended by physicians to avoid contracting and spreading COVID-19.
Did Santa Wear a Mask? by Chesand Gregory is a unique and extraordinary book about a frightening time in the world’s history. Gregory’s words find the delicate balance of preparing for a storm while remaining calm and successfully pushing through the storm. That’s how I read the subplot, at least. The book shows how Santa can find a way to deliver the presents to all good children with the help of the Jag brothers, Jali and Jax; it also illustrates how helping one another during a crisis can affect our lives. It shows how we can hold on to one another and be there when the world is upending.
