Demons & Thieves is a Christian historical fiction novel by author Brae Wyckoff. Set against the backdrop of biblical Israel in the time of Jesus Christ, Wyckoff focuses not on the Messiah, but on the two thieves on the cross, Dismas and Gestas. From there the story expands into one of seeking out destiny and family, but is also a tale of good and evil as we are introduced to the concept of Jesus’ exorcism of evil demons from the spirit of man. The Miracle of the Swine is given a new and imaginative retelling as our characters walk the thin line between the spiritual and the sinful in this brutal ancient world.
Despite having very little knowledge of this area of Bible stories, I found Demons & Thieves to be an engrossing novel in its own right. Brae Wyckoff’s writing style is fluid, concise but appropriately deep, and it follows the golden rule of morality fiction by leaving readers to make judgements and consider philosophy without ramming it down their throats. Wyckoff creates an enormous amount of sympathy as we follow our would-be heroes through two decades of both heartbreak and joy, transforming them into fully-rounded characters who settled deep in my heart during the novel’s journey. The setting was vivid and accurate to the trials of the people who lived at the time, conjuring an overall sense of raw struggle that was inspiring and harrowing to read about. Christian or not, Demons & Thieves is a must-read for anyone seeking emotive and inspirational fiction.
