Dementia: Loving Care with a Therapeutic Benefit by Peggy Watson M.S., CCC-SLP, and Nancy Shadowens M.S. is a helpful guide to all those handling dementia patients. The book is a tool for understanding dementia and guiding one's loved ones through the process with care and dignity. The author not only speaks about the different types of dementia, but also gives tips and advice on how to understand a dementia patient and give them the required attention and care. The different levels of dementia and how to cope with the patient at each level are also discussed. It's a well written book without too many medical terms and can be easily understood by any reader, as well as those who do not have a medical background.
I found the book useful to therapists, counselors and also families who are dealing with dementia patients. The author also speaks about the problems caregivers face while handling a dementia patient, which is very helpful. The topic is discussed extensively and the book is helpful to anyone who is handling a dementia patient at home. The book will make readers more compassionate towards a dementia patient and also understand their needs better.
From the definition of dementia to types and causes of dementia and to memory processes, this book covers everything. Reading this will give all those who care for dementia patients hope and some direction in their lives. The author's knowledge on the topic, the various discussions and exercises help readers understand the subject clearly. An excellent tool for all those caregivers, therapists, counselors, and family members who handle dementia patients.
