Deep Roots, Dark Forests is a 151-page poetry book written by Vanessa K. Eccles. The verse is written to focus on the beauty of nature’s dominion, from the wide weaving tree roots that claw at the dirt to the beautiful Spanish moss that dangles off the tree branches. Deep Roots, Dark Forests is written in a free-verse style, so there is no regular rhyme attached to the selections. Each poem has a picture affixed that sets the tone with the images ranging from a cemetery at sunset to the beautiful architecture found in the southern states. My personal favorites were the poems Silent, Castle of Words, and Secret Savannah which brought me back to my time walking through the classy streets of one of America’s oldest cities. Near the end, the author also provides a link to a podcast she is involved in that centers around similar topics.

I enjoyed partaking in this collection of work from Eccles as it provides the reader with beautiful imagery of the things the author holds dear. Much of the writing is steeped in rich and deep metaphors which aid the reader in fully immersing themselves in the pages. Deep Roots, Dark Forests is written about the author's world in the south and it's aptly penned with a southern charm that befits its roots. I would recommend this book to adult poetry lovers everywhere. The metaphorical language - while it might be a bit complicated for an adolescent reader - is sure to engage its adult audience from front cover to back.
