“It occurred to me last night that when you die, so does everybody else.” This rather deep statement, uttered by one of the many detectives trying to zero in on what appears to be a serial killer in Death On A Dark Street by Fred Dickey, lingered in my mind after I finished reading this crime thriller which, in many ways, is so much more than just another “whodunit”. Here’s why. While the plot is centered on Detective Jaye Peoria and her team’s efforts to nail “The Dark Street Assassin” - who chokes downtrodden women, douses them in bleach, and leaves no clues to his identity - several other themes are explored through the interesting and colorful cast of characters of Jaye herself, her police department comrades, criminal offenders and a psychologist who provides a romantic angle. What might be especially interesting to female readers is seeing the lengths to which Jaye must go to be accepted by her colleagues, from being comfortable with male cop jargon, jokes and attitudes while inwardly coping with her female reaction to seeing her own sex heartlessly murdered and discarded like rubbish.

Readers who are intrigued by the effects of a perpetrator’s past on their present criminal activity will enjoy the psychological profiling coupled with the methods used by the police to narrow down the suspect list. And as always in crime thriller fiction, what can be more riveting than learning just how evil the narcissistic killer is, how clever he believes he is, and seeing him finally caught after the author has managed to keep us turning pages to the very end before we discover his identity. Overall, Death On A Dark Street is an entertaining read that offers suspense relieved by humorous cop banter, along with a little sex and romance and plenty of other issues to think about after you close the book. Enjoy!

As a retired police officer, I can say this book could have been written by a cop. Dickey obviously did his research and got it right. Liked the accurate portrayal of the investigative techniques and the interaction amongst the cops. Suspenseful plot keeps your attention. Fred Dickey and Detective Jaye Peoria have gained a fan.

A novel with "page turners" that you'd best read undisturbed for the full effect.
Everyone in San Diego county should have a read, and vision the inhabitants law-enforcement come in contact with daily, in every configuration and situation.

I enjoyed following the investigation of The various suspects, also that it was the first serious crime the lady detective was involved in, Liked the romantic dalliances, showing her to have a bit of fun in off duty moments. Have recommended it to my brother in law.

Warning! Don’t start this book if you have a busy schedule. You will not want to put it down! Very well written with an excellent idea of what it’s like to be searching for a killer in the life of a detective. Loved the San Diego references. Characters are well drawn out and hopefully they will be seen again in a sequel.
