Detective Sergeant Matthew Compton of the Kent C.I.D was relieved to retain his position after being involved, together with his senior, Detective Sergeant Jacob Murray, in a botched-up murder investigation. After being reassigned to a new boss, Compton is sent to investigate an assault case at a local petrol station. Since there was no real victim nor was a report filed of the assault, Compton’s new boss insists that he abandon the case. With CCTV footage and a paper with unusual writing as his only leads, Compton decides to pursue the investigation. Exactly what was shown in the footage? Simultaneously, Compton’s former boss Murray is assigned a case involving the alleged murder of a top employee at a financial firm. Interestingly, Murray also retrieves a paper with strange writing from the crime scene. What exactly was on the paper and were Compton’s and Murray’s cases linked? Get yourself Beth Savoie’s Death Illuminated: A Compton and Murray Mystery and the second installment in the series to know how it all goes down.
Grab a bag of popcorn and sit back in your favorite spot because once you flip through the first page of Beth Savoie’s compelling read, you will only stop at the end. If you are looking for a mystery murder novel laced with spell-binding plot twists, Death Illuminated is a must-read for you. Savoie hinges her narration on romance, crime, family feuds, generational trauma, love affairs, dirty secrets, deception, and distrust. She kept me on edge with thrills, tension, and suspense. The subtle tone in the narration had me enthralled. Just when I thought I had a case figured out, the story picked up the pace and moved in another direction. The depictions of the scenes were impressively vivid. They made the reading experience feel like watching a small-town murder and sleuth movie. I loved how the author developed the cast with traits and emotions and made their chemistry palpable. Compton is a genius of a detective who is haunted by his troubled past. I’m looking forward to reading more of Savoie’s work.
