It is Detective Sergeant Matthew Compton’s first new assignment after an incident. Compton had lied to DI Murray about a witness and Murray’s life was put in danger. Compton had saved Murray’s life, but they did not trust each other after the event. As a result, Murray requested not to work with Compton anymore. Compton is called to investigate an assault at Morrison's Petrol Station. Byron saw that the garbage bins were turned over and looked at the video footage to see what happened. He saw the assault and phoned it in. There was no victim to interview, and the assault was never reported. Later, a body is found at Channing Financial Group. Murray asks Compton for help with examining the evidence he found, and they end up working together in Death Illuminated: A Compton and Murray Mystery by Beth Savoie.

Death Illuminated by Beth Savoie has an interesting and exciting plot. The story is fast-paced and full of action. I was intrigued from the first page as the suspense made the story more powerful. I could not turn the pages fast enough as I had to know what would happen next. With all the twists and turns there was never a dull moment. Compton's and Murray’s investigations were related separately. It was easy to follow, and the chapters flowed into each other. The characters were authentic and I could relate to them. They were strong throughout the story and described in a way so that they felt like ordinary people I know. The story is excellently written and held my attention. The events were descriptive and felt real, and there was more to this story than I expected.

Death Illuminated by Beth Savoie is a Compton and Murray Mystery. Matthew Compton's recent choices have landed him in a bit of hot water and could potentially put his career in jeopardy, yet somehow he manages to keep his position. Now he has a new partner in D.I. Frank Harper. He gets put onto a new case investigating assaults on prostitutes that share one commonality – strange messages that send him to an even stranger source. Meanwhile, Jacob Murray is facing his own predicaments after no longer being Matthew's partner. Tackling a mysterious case, he's sent after a murderer that leaves behind weird clues. Matthew and Jacob soon discover that their cases share a culprit that finds them reuniting in a race to stop the next attack before the victim is someone close to them.

Both characters are well-rounded with relatable flaws and attributes that make connections easy to form with them. Shifting between their perspectives, Beth Savoie explores their opinions of each other while also weaving two threads of mystery that begin separately before being woven together by the end. The mystery is intricately crafted as two separate cases are cleverly written in which two sides slowly draw you into one case and push these two characters back together. Savoie weaves a little irony into the story as the two men are relieved at being apart only to then need to work together. The mystery draws you in through the characters of Matthew and Murray as they work to solve a murder, assaults, and strange messages that lead to a surprising killer. A finely crafted mystery, Death Illuminated weaves a well-crafted plot with engaging characters, cryptic clues, and a thrilling conclusion.

Couldn’t put this book down! Wow! Matthew is a handful and I adore Jacob and Vickie. I couldn’t stop turning these pages as the mystery unfolded before me! Each page was just exciting as the one before. After reading this, I found another book by this Author and read the other book too. Just wow! I’m hoping there’s another book coming soon. I just can’t get enough of Matthew!
