Dead Reckoning by Rex Owens is the third book in the Irish Troubles series, featuring a very compelling and controversial character — Ian Murphy. It’s a tale of redemption and one man’s struggle to find inner freedom and peace. Ian is an internally fractured man, a man suffering from an addiction to whisky. He’s suffered the devastating blow of losing his lifelong friend, Kieran Fitzpatrick. Can he keep his promise to mentor his friend’s twenty-two-year-old son, William Butler Boyle? Follow Ian as he fights to contribute to the freedom of his people, develops a political relationship with Sinn Fein, works to win votes for their candidates, and complete the journey with his ultimate memoir. Can this man find redemption and free his soul from guilt?
Rex Owens’ novel is an excellent story that showcases the soul of the Irish people, a tale with strong political underpinnings and a relevant social and political setting. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions, the refined sense of humor, and the social and cultural commentaries woven into the narrative. Ian Murphy is a character that readers can easily relate to, deeply human and burdened by the errors of his past. He is a man on the path to reforming himself. The writing is atmospheric and punctuated by realistic dialogues. Dead Reckoning is engaging, accomplished with a strong plot structure and characters that evolve through the narrative. While the story is beautifully told, it is the strength of character that will have most readers turning the pages. I found it to be a great read; delightful and totally absorbing.
