Cradle Gift is the second book in the Faerie Legacy Series by Patricia Bossano, a fantasy with a strong appeal for young adult readers. When Maité is born, Nahia bestows on her a precious gift, an event she would not remember until fifteen years later. It is the Cradle Gift and Nahia hasn’t bestowed one for a very long time. When Maité turns seventeen, she suffers the incredible loss of her parents and experiences the excruciating pain of loneliness in a foreign country. But it’s just the beginning of her troubles, for the world of Faerie is undergoing a powerful conflict and her life is intrinsically connected to it. Nahia and the Beautiful One are in a war to control the realm of the Faerie and Maité will need her gift to help in the balance of this world. With the help of Emily, her best friend, and David, the gifted young man, she is about to discover more of her powers. But can she accept her destiny?
Patricia Bossano’s writing has a magic of its own. The words flow from a world deeply imagined and carry a spell that doesn’t miss. I was pulled in from the very first page and enjoyed the rituals surrounding the birth of the protagonist. The reader is transported into another world, a dream world that is filled with infinite possibilities. In the prologue, Bossano describes an important moment in the life of the protagonist: "Fey takes the child through the veil dividing one world from the next — there the child learns what others cannot yet know, beholds what no human eye has seen, and grasps what has been for times unknown." This intriguing line already sets the protagonist apart and makes the reader want to know what she’ll grow up to be and the world she knows that others are yet to know. The prose is just beautiful, the writing infused with an eeriness that makes the reader feel as though they are dreaming. But the narrative isn’t bereft of the realism and humanity that make characters believable and lovable. Cradle Gift is a delightful read for fans of the supernatural and fantasy.
