Coyote Loop: A Novel by L. C. Fiore is a gritty tale that follows one man’s journey to success, explores the challenges of parenting, and examines what a father will do to build a strong relationship with his daughter. Set in Chicago against the backdrop of the Great Recession, the story follows forty-four-year-old John Ganzi, a successful options trader with a difficult childhood. John has turned out to be better than his father and anyone in the family. Now divorced, the closest person in his life is his childhood friend turned clerk. When his daughter, Jeanie, moves in with him, John is determined to set the perfect example of a dad. Little does he know that his innocent-looking daughter is far craftier than anyone can imagine, prone to deception and addiction. When the inevitable happens, father and daughter must work out their relationship, face who they truly are, determine how to be better people, or risk losing everything.
This is a wonderful story with a well-crafted setting that reads like a character in its own right. The pulse of the city is captured in the story with exceptional brilliance. The characters are memorable, their backgrounds are solid, and readers will quickly notice how the protagonist's upbringing reflects in his manners and speech. Relationships are skillfully explored in this novel, and as readers follow John, they also begin to sympathize with him. He is a genuinely flawed character. Coyote Loop: A Novel is deft and balanced, written in prose that is fluid and replete with mesmerizing descriptions. Motivation is brilliantly accomplished, and readers will discover an unforgettable character driven by the desire to be nothing like his father. Themes of love, family, relationships, parenting, and authenticity are elaborately written. L. C. Fiore's engaging humor flows naturally throughout the exciting ride with John Ganzi.
