"Consider the Dragonfly" by Malcolm Ivey is a novel that centers on Paul McAllister better known as CJ. He experienced bullying in school and one time when he got enough of the abuse he decided to avenge himself against the bullies. Because of this act of retribution CJ spent some time in juvenile hall. While in there he met someone who became significant in his downward spiral after getting out. While he was getting involved in crimes, his mom tried her best to keep their family together even as his dad experienced a psychotic break. The crimes in which he was getting involved eventually led to him spending some time in jail.
The first part of the book started out a little slowly for me but by the beginning of part two, the story picked up and it got more interesting. And by the end of the book, I wanted more. I loved the ending although I would want to read more about what happened to CJ after he got off the bus. I hope that Malcolm Ivey decides to write a sequel to this book. I am determined to read it as soon it appears. CJ’s dad is not a model father in the story but I still liked his character, especially when he stood up for CJ in the hearing. His mother was very strong and it was nice that no matter how screwed up CJ became over time, his mother was always supportive of him. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
