Companion of the Ash by Kate Spitzmiller tells the story of the horrific battle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Hector, the husband of Princess Andromache, has been brutally slain as she watched, and she vowed her hatred of the man who had murdered her husband and tortured his body so vilely. Trojan soldiers are murdered in the onslaught of a battle from which Andromache cannot hide herself, her ladies or her son. After being taken from her home with the knowledge that her son would be killed, the princess and her female companion found themselves on a Greek ship. Theron claimed her companion while Princess Andromache was to belong to Pyrrhus. How would they survive the horrible humiliation and violation aboard the Greek ship? Did Pyrrhus really think that the princess would happily comply with his commands without a fight? Would she ever be strong enough to escape with her companion, Estis, and Prince Hector’s brother? Not knowing how she would do it, Andromache knew she had to try to get back to Troy, where she and the other captives belonged.
Companion of the Ash by Kate Spitzmiller is a wonderful story of the war between Greece and Troy. The plot thickens quickly as Prince Hector is killed and his wife, Andromache, is captured along with others, including their young heir to the throne. I found this story twisted and turned in directions that I did not expect as the Princess of Troy held firm and fought against her captor, Pyrrhus, with a strength that women of those long ago times rarely demonstrated. The characters are very realistic and interesting with their courage in savage situations and the strength they possess. I love the will of Princess Andromache as she tries to protect everyone she holds dear and would I love to read more books by Kate Spitzmiller in the near future.
