Coming to Las Vegas by Carolyn V. Hamilton is the story of a girl who, hooked on the idea of adventure, joins The Las Vegas International Circus, with her friend Del and a trailer. “This may not be a very intellectually stimulating place to live, but it certainly is colorful!” she finds, and gets her first job with the circus group. Quitting that, she moves on to become a waitress at a newly opened hotel, MGM Grand. The pay is good and so are the tips and Del, who is a security guard, finds it beneficial to let her continue with the job. But the job in Las Vegas, the Disneyland for adults, is stimulating, entertaining, and tiring as well as boring for Carolyn. She is slowly getting fed up with the dirty talk and other controversies surrounding the daily work. And finally, on realizing the total lack of self esteem the job is leading to, she decides to quit.
Coming to Las Vegas by Carolyn V. Hamilton is a memoir of her experiences as a cocktail waitress in 70's Las Vegas, and contains many humorous insights like “Clap your hands and a beautiful girl comes running. What a subtle way for a man to feel powerful and in control.” Some of the high points of this book include candid accounts and behind the scenes pictures, as well as a mature look, with a sense of humor, at the travails cocktail waitresses regularly endured. A very good read, indeed.
