While it is certainly true that not everyone is cut out for college and that college doesn’t guarantee success, in College: Success Without It Edward Wynn makes some bold statements about the lack of need for a college degree. For those who are curious as to whether or not they can achieve success without a college degree, Wynn does a good job of providing success stories of people who didn’t attend college, including Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Rachel Ray.

Wynn asserts that, “If you weren’t born with a silver spoon or are in a financial crisis or have to earn bread and butter for your family at a young age, then affording college won’t be possible for you.” As someone not born into a wealthy family and having to care for myself at a young age, I can proudly say that I have earned two undergraduate and four graduate degrees. As a college professor, I am always telling my students that getting a degree doesn’t make them smarter than those who don’t have one, but it provides them with knowledge and a broader perspective on subjects to which they might not otherwise be exposed.

College: Success Without It provides eight practical steps for succeeding without a college education, ranging from pursuing your passion to finding a mentor to expanding your social network. This book serves as a morale booster for those who want to be successful in their careers, but aren’t looking for college education to get them there.
