Cold War Kid, a memoir by Tom Hanley, is an amazing book about life in the Cold War era, which is rib ticklingly funny and a very different read. Hanley, an accomplished writer, has managed to make a rather dry topic funny and interesting with a unique take on his life - from growing up as a military brat, as he puts it comically, on Air Force bases throughout the country to becoming a pilot, writer, artist and now a surfer. The introduction is candid and prepares the reader for a journey into Hanley’s life through the perspective of his humour, which at times is great fun, and at times thought provoking in a really splendid work of narrative prose.

Cold War Kid is a hilarious but intelligent read. It does not read like a normal memoir or autobiography and that is what makes it amazing. The narrative descriptive style used in Cold War Kid is not handled very well by many authors, but Hanley manages to pull it off to perfection. The clichés are tongue in cheek, especially when Tom Hanley talks about his childhood and school life, and his time as a writer. The book is filled with humorous remarks so poignant that one tends to giggle while reading. Tom Hanley’s Cold War Kid is highly recommended to everyone who wants some real insight into the minds and mentality of the youth growing up when the two blocs were ruling the roost back during the major part of the 20th century. A great read for anyone who would like something different from the ordinary memoir.
