After the death of his parents, Cody Hawke moved to Maine and now lives at Freya Manor with his adoptive siblings, Shelby Long, Martin Speck, and Charlotte Cower. They soon discover that the manor was built on sacred land, a magical place where two guardians protect its many secrets, including a bridge that leads to places beyond their imagination. However, there are dangerous beasts and obstacles that await them before they can unravel the ancient secrets that are tied to Freya Manor.
Cody Hawke and the Secret of Freya Manor by Melanie Mihm is a fantasy adventure that doesn’t waste any time showing its mythology and supernatural creatures. It starts with a strong and intriguing prologue, and the plot is extensive as the kids keep stumbling upon strange happenings, places and beings－wraiths, serpents, dragon, giant bird, a witch and many more. There’s even alternate dimensions and time-traveling that involves Norse and Native Americans legends. It's an engaging story with lots of character-building moments and a great message of familial bonds.
The characters are likable and have great qualities. Cody has a strong sense of responsibility toward his adoptive siblings, despite his tendencies to get them into trouble. Shelby might be a drama queen but she has a good motherly trait. Martin is the funny one, and I have a soft spot for the timid but intelligent Charlotte. Much suited for younger teen readers, Mihm’s Cody Hawke and the Secret of Freya Manor is a book that one can look forward to enjoying each day, reading about the adventures of its young protagonists.
