Cocktails At Sunset is a work of cozy and quirky mystery fiction penned by author L. A. Keller and forms the second book in the series of Jayne Stanford Mysteries. Our charming and clumsy central character Jayne gets herself embroiled in the minute details of another murderous mystery when she hears of a co-worker’s relative dying under suspicious circumstances at Sunset Elderly Living Facility. With her powerful memory and total lack of grace in full swing, Jayne is swept up in the investigation, searching for the person who is stealing the final years of the residents, one by one. What results is a charming, funny ride through interesting suspects and quirky turns of fate.
Whilst a far-fetched comedy-mystery won’t suit all readers of this genre, I absolutely loved this mashup of chick lit, murder mystery, and slapstick humor. Jayne is a delightful would-be sleuth whom readers can always relate to, never alienated by her deductions and always charmed by her attitude. L. A. Keller brings her to life with compelling, zippy dialogue and a bright narrative style that includes readers in her thought processes and detail-spotting. The setting was also masterfully crafted for full comedic effect, with a hilarious cast of characters at the old folks’ home and a really amusing plot twist that brings about the answer. Overall, Cocktails At Sunset is a well crafted and highly satisfying murder mystery with plenty of frivolity and fun. Highly recommended for those readers who love to smile from cover to cover.
