I picked up Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne because I was looking for a light, entertaining read and this book promised to be just that. It is a collection of stories from the author’s own travelling experiences. You know, the kind of experiences you like reading about because they’re hilarious, but the ones you would never want to have yourself. In many of the stories, the author has to stare death in the eye – be it in the shape of a disgruntled snake or the lack of oxygen at high altitude. She travels to Africa, South America, Nepal, Japan and Thailand, and learns that it usually is a good idea to think twice, do what the locals do, and not to be too confident.

The cover of Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne almost made me not choose it, but fortunately, in this case, the book really can’t be judged by its cover. After reading it, I kind of understand why such a simple, childlike cover has been chosen. The variety of stories was surprising: in one story we follow the author as she gets on the wrong bus and has to find out what it feels like to be the minority. In another story, she has to deal with a guide who has never guided before. But that might have been better than the guide who wasn’t a guide after all.

The stories are hilarious and very entertaining to read. It’s the ideal book for people who like to learn a little bit more about other countries, how other people see these countries, and what kind of experiences you would rather not have there. I can find only one fault with this book: it’s too short! I could have read more of this – but then, I’d feel sorry for the author if she would have to go through more of the same.
