City Of The Fallen by Robert Slaughter and Jerry Brown is an epic fantasy novel with two remarkable protagonists on a mission. Jasmyn is a witch who has no idea who she is. Washed ashore and waking up in a prison, Jasmyn was destined for a life of suffering, with no magic or death until Jyphe walked in and gave her a choice: help him eliminate the necromancer Nekras and get safely away from the people who want her dead. Azriel, on the other hand, is a half-vampire on another mission but somehow ends up on a quest to find and destroy Nekras as well. Destined to protect Jador, Azriel and Jasmyn will have to work harder than ever to get the job done. The stakes are high for both of them. With strange creatures, demons, and more chasing them, Jasmyn and Azriel need to be on their toes. Will they succeed or are they doomed to fail?
Exciting and inviting, City Of The Fallen makes twists and turns that had me loving it to bits. Fantasy novels usually tend to drag, but not this one. The pace is perfect, the story never slows, and the protagonists get plenty of time to tell their stories. I love Jasmyn, but Azriel has a special place in my heart. He is smart, warm-hearted, and ready to help. However, that doesn’t make him a pushover. Azriel knows where his strength lies, and he is not afraid to use it. Jasmyn, on the other hand, is pure raw power. Even with her having no clue who she is, she exudes strength. The plot is incredible, and the narrative is fantastic. I loved the dialogue and enjoyed how the style of narrative changes with the change in points of view. That little detail changed the whole reading experience for me. I hope that Robert Slaughter and Jerry Brown have a sequel planned!
