Chuck the Cheetah: The Great Savannah Relay by K.A. Mulenga is a heartwarming children’s story that explores the power of teamwork and friendship. Chuck is the fastest land animal in the forest. He is so good at running, and he is respected and loved for it. However, Chuck now learns to lose gracefully and values collaboration. One day, he decides to involve the other animals in the savannah in a race. He calls on all animals (of all types and sizes) from every part of the forest to contribute their unique abilities to overcome obstacles. From elephants clearing paths to monkeys assisting in river crossings, the race becomes a celebration of unity as animals learn to lean on one another’s strengths. They set a date, and everyone prepares for the big day, but guess what? Chuck does a surprising thing.
Reading Chuck the Cheetah: The Great Savannah Relay was an enjoyable and enriching experience. I easily followed and appreciated the story's beautifully paced balance between moments of action and opportunities for character growth. The book teaches children about teamwork and inclusion. It is not enough to be the best; what do you do to help other people around you? The themes of collaboration and friendship are seamlessly woven into the narrative, presenting a powerful message that’s relevant to both children and adults. The illustrations by Boutique Books are fun. Children will learn that everyone is useful in their own way—everyone can do something! Younger children will love the book, especially because of its colorful parts. There is also a coloring exercise section that I believe will be very engaging for all children.
