William Barrington Worden, author of Christmas Sacred, has written a short but poignant book that very well may have changed my life forever, and inspired me to hold a sign like the vagrant during the Christmas season to remind people what it’s all about. I know that a book review should be a couple of hundred words, but right now all I can think, after having just finished reading Christmas Sacred, is “Wow!”
In just 24 pages of poetry, William Barrington Worden has delivered a tome of epic consequence and impact with Christmas Sacred. There are twists and turns as the main character struggles with the true meaning of Christmas and how his answer changes once he hears the wise and genuine words of a vagrant in the street.
From seeing parents rushing to sales in the mall and fighting over toys, to children delighting in the snow, the main character thinks he has reached his goal of understanding the true meaning of Christmas when he sees a vagrant holding a sign that he reads as “Christmas Sacred.” Telling the vagrant that he’s a “Christmas fan,” and then explaining that he sees Christmas as a time when the hearts of mankind are different and families reunite, he is in for a rude but much needed awakening when the vagrant explains his sign more fully.
With simple yet elegant illustrations and a Christmas story that is like no other, I can’t say enough good things about Christmas Sacred by William Barrington Worden. Every family should read this poem each December to remind them what Christmas is all about.
