China Rising by Paul Sande is a mesmerizing political thriller with strong themes and characters, a novel that fans of military stories will adore. A lot happens in the plot, including the assassination of the Chinese Vice President, the creation of Liquid Steel that enables fully functional 3D printed weapons, and the Chinese military involvement in disputed waterways. While there is much threat from China and her growing economy, President Barbara Anderson’s first year in office is plagued with a crisis as well. There are enemies who want her out of the White House and there is only one person she can trust: DIA agent Lavinia Walsh. Walsh’s investigation reveals a threat that isn’t just aimed at the President but the entire nation. While time is running out, can they root out the evil before it becomes manifest?

This is a spellbinding story that feels as real as today’s tense political landscape. I enjoyed the way Paul Sande writes about the threat that China poses to the global economy and politics, and it is common knowledge that China has been invading the South East seas. The characters are high profile ones and the plotlines feature a conflict that affects everyone’s lives. The prose is top-notch and it features vivid descriptions. The setting comes out in the narrative and I loved the author’s sense of imagery. China Rising has hints of science fiction, but it is a fast-paced, conflict-driven political thriller featuring characters that readers will love. One of the books that I want to see made into a movie.

China Rising by Paul Sande takes place in the United States and in China. I suspect this is not the first in a series of books as some mention was made of earlier events. Lavinia, the main character, works for the US government as a spy. She is given the task of discovering who sent a fake video, which went viral, attacking the President. It portrays POTUS in a treasonous light. Lavinia works with an ace hacker, Jacob, who can work miracles with a computer and a vast arrange of gadgetry. Together they fly to China to uncover the enemy. On two occasions Lavinia is in the spotlight for committing murder and she is forced to flee. The pace does not let up from beginning to end.

Paul Sande’s China Rising was a great book. I read it in two sittings, turning the pages as fast as I could. The non-stop action was excellent, and although it was a little improbable in places, this did not detract from my enjoyment. I liked the main characters, especially Lavinia, and I was pleased to see the usual love interest between the main players was not present – the heroine’s boyfriend played a separate role altogether. The action moved between the United States and China, with both heads of state attacked simultaneously by those who would take power. In one instance this succeeds, and I expect there will be another book to tie up that final loose end. I thoroughly enjoyed China Rising and would recommend it to readers who like a fast-paced thriller, and don’t expect it to be pedantic or true to everyday life. It’s a story with world domination, a threatening third world war, and a rather unusual refuge for the heroine.
