When you encounter others, are you helpful to them? Do you bring peace to their lives? Do you leave them better than when you met them? Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is a Spaniard who always wanted to be a leader, and in Children of the Sun by Isabel M. Oxford he got his chance. Children of the Sun is a true story. Follow Alvar’s journey as he learns what it takes to become a true and effective leader as he travels from Florida to New Spain. During his journey he, along with Esteban, Castillo and Dorantes, became known by the Native Americans as the Children of the Sun. They were able to bring healing, power and love wherever they went. It was Alvar’s belief in God that guided him and the others to their destiny.
I loved Children of the Sun by Isabel M. Oxford because I had never heard about Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. I did hear about whites and other settlers teaching the Native Americans about God, but did not know of any actual stories to support it. It was great to see that despite the challenges that Alvar experienced - from betrayal and slavery to sickness and hunger - he was able to overcome these issues. Alvar was able to show Esteban, Castillo and Dorantes not only his faith in God, but how God was able to make others help them during their journey. Even their alleged enemies were helpful during these times. if you like true stories and historical events, try Children of the Sun by Isabel M. Oxford.
