Child Protection Behind Closed Doors by Jo Cooling offers an unflinchingly candid and insightful view into the often-hidden reality of child protection. The book is a personal memoir and an exposé of the systemic challenges and emotional toll experienced by those working within the child protection system. Cooling, a seasoned child protection worker, gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of her role, dealing with heart-wrenching and hopeful cases. Her narrative is vivid and engaging, filled with stories ranging from tragic to triumphant, highlighting the resilience of the children and workers involved.
Jo Cooling does not shy away from discussing the flaws within the system, including the bureaucratic hurdles and the sometimes toxic workplace culture that can pervade child protection agencies. She also explores the personal struggles of the workers, including bullying and burnout, providing a comprehensive view rarely discussed in public forums. Cooling does disclose that the book covers her time with CPS, which began in 2002 and ended in 2012, and is not reflective of today’s operations. Nonetheless, news stories suggest the system continues to have flaws that must be addressed. Child Protection Behind Closed Doors is eye-opening and a significant contribution to the literature on social work and public welfare. Cooling explains why she wanted to become a child protection worker and why she chose to work with high-risk adolescents. The memoir takes readers deep inside the system and calls for systemic reform. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in social work, public policy, or anyone interested in the realities behind child protection efforts.
