Chickens In The Yard by Endreketta is an illustrated children’s book that is everything chicken. Annie’s yard is filled with them, and they not only rule the roost but the yard, the car, the porch, the deck, and everywhere else on the property! Sheltered in the coop at night and released outside during the day, they roam free, laying their eggs and living a chicken’s life to the fullest.

I’ve raised various breeds of chickens for years growing up, and I easily related to the pictures and stories of the free-ranging hens. Each chicken has a different personality and yes, some of the hens will hide their eggs to keep them safe from the daily gathering. This book reflects that aspect very well. A number of different varieties are represented in the beautiful artwork, showing each hen’s individuality. And speaking of art, it is well done, providing plentiful detail and bright colors, setting off each page.

This is a fun book to read with kids who are being introduced to chickens for the first time. It provides a realistic picture of what it takes to raise chickens, especially those that are free-range. You can’t corral ‘em like sheep or pigs, but they are tameable, and it’s obvious these fowls really captured the author’s heart. The book is easy to read, filled with personality, and captures the colorful daily lives of chickens. Chickens In The Yard by Endreketta is highly recommended for children and all who love farm animals.

Chickens In The Yard is a children’s animal picture book written and illustrated by Endreketta. Annie’s yard is home to a group of most exceptional hens. They live there all year long, whatever the season, and every day you can bet they’ll be found outside, running around and exploring their world. Each morning, Annie lets them out of their coop after she finishes feeding her kids and getting them off to school. After that, there are chickens in the yard almost everywhere, even sometimes in the car. Annie loves her chickens, and she knows each one by name. Her chickens know to lay their eggs in the special nesting boxes Annie has in their coop. But one, of course, has other ideas about where to lay her eggs. And every day the great egg hunt commences.

Endreketta’s Chickens In The Yard celebrates the author’s friend and her chickens. Each page shares the life and experiences of free-range chickens with accompanying illustrations that give the story zing. Each pen and wash illustration shows readers that marvelous flock of chickens in all their variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. The author/artist also makes Annie’s backyard glow in its summer finery, filled with grass, plants, and flowers, and, you guessed it, chickens. I love how this book introduces kids to the reality of where the free-range eggs in their breakfasts come from, gives the chickens personalities and names, and makes their lives real. This book is a grand selection for story hour, but it’s also suitable for new readers to try on their own. Chickens In The Yard is most highly recommended.

Chickens In The Yard is a work of fiction in the form of a children’s picture book which focuses on animal themes. It was written and illustrated by author Endreketta. In this charming story about her close friend’s chickens and the hijinks and havoc which they cause every day, the author introduces her young readers to the group who rule the roost at Annie’s yard. The work tells the tale in short non-rhyming verses that have a musical, rhythmic feel. Every page is accompanied by gorgeous line-drawing illustrations, many of which are filled in with bright colors to draw the eye of young readers. The work can be enjoyed by new and independent readers as well as those who read along with parents, guardians, or teachers.

Author and illustrator Endreketta brings a loving portrait of reality to life in this charming book which will surely have all its readers wanting to bring chickens home to roost in their own back yards. I loved the surprising moments and accompanying illustrations to show all the strange things that the chickens get up to, like climbing into the car and laying eggs in odd places. The art style is classic and gorgeous, but it also has that interactive element where children can point out what they see as the story unfolds. The narrative is kept simple but effective, and the formatting highlights key lines and words with a beautiful cursive font. Overall, Chickens In The Yard is a high-quality picture book that is sure to bring joy to everyone who reads it.
