Chasing the Surge: Life as a Travel Nurse in a Global Pandemic by Grover Nicodemus Street R.N., Sandra de Abreu Guidry-Street M.D., and Ja-ne de Abreu is an inspiring story of a nurse who sets out to serve in places that were hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving behind the love of his life who participated in the writing of this book; Sandra, a cancer survivor. Readers encounter a man who is bold and who sees an opportunity to become a beacon of hope and an example of selfless service in a stark and dark moment of human history. In this book, the author shares his experience of the pandemic as he travels to the places that suffered the most, helping those struck by it.
This memoir of the pandemic takes readers on a heartwarming, sometimes heart-wrenching journey from January 8, 2020 when news about the pandemic started making waves. The author captures reactions from across the globe, notably from Donald Trump who sheepishly said the virus would go away with the heat, the warnings of the CDC and Doctor Fauci, and some important moments during the evolution of the virus. Then the book takes readers on a spellbinding journey through hotspots in the country, including New Jersey, Colorado, New York, Florida, and California. Grover Nicodemus Street R.N. shares challenges in helping those hardest hit by the virus, sharing stories that are painful, and also exploring the humanity of those who put their lives on the line to serve the country.
Chasing the Surge: Life as a Travel Nurse in a Global Pandemic is detailed, written in beautiful prose, and celebrating the courage of nurses. Grover Nicodemus Street R.N. provides strong insights into what it means to serve one’s country in a time of deepest need. The writing is filled with historical elements and the depressing experience of the Covid-19 pandemic is captured with ingenuity and, at times, grim humor. This book is the best thing I have read about the pandemic; a story that should be shared.
