Captain's Logbook: Escaping Nine to Five for 24/7 is a work of non-fiction in the memoir, autobiographical, and life at sea subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author John De Silva, the titular captain of the book. In this truly fascinating account from the perspective of a ship’s captain, we find an incredible journey from one disaster to the next as De Silva manages the Cape Agulhas with little more than God by his side at the start. As the crew battles swarms of insects, technical issues, and dangerous waters, De Silva gives a dark, wry account of the daily trials and tribulations of being at the helm of it all.
Author John De Silva pulls no punches in this highly realistic look at life aboard a merchant vessel, but he also writes in a style that non-technical and non-sailing audiences can enjoy as well. There are three primary strands to the work that interweave with one another to form the overall experience; from the actual account of life at sea itself to the portrayal of intense human emotions under stress, and finishing with the compelling power of knowing that one goes with God. All of these aspects make up De Silva as a person, and we get a strong sense of identity on every page of this intriguing work because of it. You feel bonded to the author and the events he describes. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Captain's Logbook to any reader seeking a fresh and original memoir to enjoy.
