Author Biography

Evelyn Bookless grew up on a farm in the west of Ireland where she loved to make forts and play in the trees with her siblings. She is a nature lover, mum, teacher and writer. Evelyn spent 10 wonderful years living in Asia but was saddened to see beautiful rainforests cut down during her travels around the region. She recently moved to the Netherlands, where she enjoys riding Betty, her blue bike. Her favorite place to be is in the ocean, preferably somewhere warm, as she's not as tough as she used to be.

Her first picture book, Captain Green and the Plastic Scene, also illustrated by Danny Deeptown, won a Northern Lights Book Award for Children's Environmental Fiction.

Captain Green protects Planet Earth from pollution and grime in the story Captain Green and the Plastic Scene by Evelyn Bookless. He aims his green beam at litter and foul-smelling fumes. One day he gets a call from Dolphin, who is all tangled up in plastic. Captain Green unravels Dolphin but Dolphin is sad because there is plastic everywhere and Whale, Seal, and Fish have also been hurt. As he is flying, he sees a seagull gasping for air. Captain Green squeezes his belly and the seagull spews some plastic. His watch flashes the green light and he sees a turtle in trouble. Captain Green decides to solve the plastic problem. Captain Green is determined to help his friends and how does he do it? To find out, let's read the story.

The author tackles a relevant topic with finesse as Captain Green shows people how to ‘Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!’ The illustrations are charming and delightful and they give clarity to what the author is trying to convey. Children learn life lessons in a fun and interactive way through the story of Captain Green, the superhero. Tutors, educators, and parents should use this book to help children understand the hazards of using plastic and what can be done to make Planet Earth a better place for everyone to live, free from pollution. The story helps young readers understand that they just need to be human to save Earth and do not need superpowers. Like the message in the story, let us all use the three Rs and go green!

This is one of my kids favourite bedtime books. They love the detailed and fun illustrations and plastic pollution is a hot topic in our household following on from a school initiative to reduce plastic within their school environment. I love the fact that Evelyn Bookless has turned a huge problem into something that can be tackled positively by children themselves and she raises a complex problem in a simple and engaging way. I believe this book should be in every school library!
